The James River Senior Center & Public Transit is excited to welcome our community to our new home in the former IDK building!
This move marks an important new chapter for our seniors, our public transit program, and the many community members we serve each day. Thanks to the generosity, support, and encouragement of so many people, we are now operating in a space that allows us to better meet the growing needs of our community.
Our new facility provides expanded event space, improved food preparation and dining areas, dedicated spaces for community gatherings, and additional room for our Loan Closet, which houses an ever-growing inventory of medical equipment available to those in need. We also now have much-needed storage for fundraising supplies, activity materials, and program resources.
Safety and accessibility were major priorities in this move. Our new location offers improved parking, better accessibility, safer flooring, and a more comfortable environment for dining, exercise classes, dancing, and daily activities.
We are especially excited to continue offering outdoor patio space for enjoying beautiful days, along with raised gardens and welcoming areas for fellowship and relaxation.
In addition, we have room for expanded services including foot care, legal aid, massage therapy, beauty salon services, and other valuable programs that support healthy, independent living.
While we are thrilled to be in our new building, our work is not finished. Continued improvements and final touches are still ahead as we work to create the best possible space for our seniors and community—all while striving to remain financially responsible and debt-free.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this milestone and invite you to continue being part of this journey. Whether through volunteering, ideas, financial support, or simply spreading the word, your partnership makes a difference.

James River Senior Center and Public Transit is embarking on an adventure. One that will benefit seniors and others in our community, and we would welcome your thoughts. We will be moving to the old IDK building; but this won’t happen over night. The time it takes partially depends on funding.
The building will need renovating as well as building additions. The plan is to increase event space, food preparation space, in-house and community event areas, and Loan Closet space for our ever-increasing inventory of medical equipment. We also will add more storage for articles needed for our fundraising and senior activities.Â
Safety is a big issue at our current location. Part of the problem is parking…or lack thereof. At the new location, that matter of safety could be greatly reduced with a paved parking lot. Another area of concern is the carpeting. This is both a cleanliness and safety concern. During exercise/dance it is a tripping hazard and for our dining it is a cleanliness issue. We hope to resolve both of these concerns with alternative floor coverings.
We will keep the patio for those days that are nice to enjoy the outdoors and even have some raised gardens. We will also have a space for other services…including foot care, legal aid, massage therapy and a beauty salon!Â
Our hope is to keep spending to a minimum and to stay out of debt. We hope you will join us in this venture! Watch for more updates. For questions, or if you would like to volunteer to come along side of us in the project with ideas, volunteering or donations, contact us at: jamesriverseniors@gmail.com
